Inner Magnetospheric Response to the Interplanetary Magnetic Field <i>B</i> <i>y</i> Component: Van Allen Probes and Arase Observations

چکیده

We utilize 17 years of combined Van Allen Probes and Arase data to statistically analyze the response inner magnetosphere orientation interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component. Past studies have demonstrated that IMF component introduces a similarly oriented into magnetosphere. However, these tended focus on lines in magnetotail only reaching as close Earth geosynchronous orbit. exploiting from magnetospheric spacecraft, we been able investigate at radial distances <7RE. When subtracting background values, provided by T01 IGRF models, find does affect configuration This control is observed throughout magnetosphere, across both hemispheres, all distances, local time sectors. The ratio residual, also known “penetration efficiency,” found be ?0.33. Bz increase, or inhibit, this depending upon its orientation.

Dayside response of the magnetosphere to a small shock compression: Van Allen Probes, Magnetospheric MultiScale, and GOES‐13

Observations from Magnetospheric MultiScale (~8 Re) and Van Allen Probes (~5 and 4 Re) show that the initial dayside response to a small interplanetary shock is a double-peaked dawnward electric field, which is distinctly different from the usual bipolar (dawnward and then duskward) signature reported for large shocks. The associated E × B flow is radially inward. The shock compressed the magne...

The ARASE (ERG) magnetic field investigation

The fluxgate magnetometer for the Arase (ERG) spacecraft mission was built to investigate particle acceleration processes in the inner magnetosphere. Precise measurements of the field intensity and direction are essential in studying the motion of particles, the properties of waves interacting with the particles, and magnetic field variations induced by electric currents. By observing temporal ...

Inner Magnetospheric Accelerators in High Magnetic Field Pulsars

Photon splitting is a QED process that can potentially suppress pair production in the inner magnetosphere of a pulsar with a super-strong magnetic field, and hence, may quench radio emission from these objects. While it is unknown how many splitting modes really operate in supercritical fields, we derive gap parameters of a high magnetic field pulsar for both the vacuum-type gap and the space-...

Van Allen Probes observations of unusually low frequency whistler mode waves observed in association with moderate magnetic storms: Statistical study

We show the first evidence for locally excited chorus at frequencies below 0.1 fce (electron cyclotron frequency) in the outer radiation belt. A statistical study of chorus during geomagnetic storms observed by the Van Allen Probes found that frequencies are often dramatically lower than expected. The frequency at peak power suddenly stops tracking the equatorial 0.5 fce and f/fce decreases rap...

Near‐Earth injection of MeV electrons associated with intense dipolarization electric fields: Van Allen Probes observations

Substorms generally inject tens to hundreds of keV electrons, but intense substorm electric fields have been shown to inject MeV electrons as well. An intriguing question is whether such MeVelectron injections can populate the outer radiation belt. Here we present observations of a substorm injection of MeV electrons into the inner magnetosphere. In the premidnight sector at L ∼ 5.5, Van Allen ...
